Turning a Crisis into a Career with Matt Beary at Clarity Strategic

Matt Beary is a Founding Principal at Clarity Strategic Opportunities is an opportunistic real estate development and value-add investment platform. “When the 2008-2009 financial crisis rolled around and the affiliated real estate collapse, I really saw an opportunity and that was a cathartic moment for me, where my desire to build a gigantic financial services firms conflicted with my desire to really go into something I'd always had interest in, which is real estate. I really felt like I saw a lot of value and decided to do something about it. I put together some small offerings and I started acquiring some houses. I started flipping houses, building processes, hiring a couple of staff, and started really building out a platform that I could scale in order to do it on a much larger base.


That was in 2009. After a couple of years,I'd built a reasonably good size platform and institutional capital was just starting to figure out how they're going to attack this. By fall of 2012, we were in a large institutional capital commitment as an operator in the space. We signed a deal, I think on a Monday and then on Wednesday, they wired the funds and said, “just get going.”
