Adapting to the Changing World of Trading with Edward Ryan of StoneX

“I was just a normal kid from Chicago who grew up exposed to the markets through field trips and friends on the exchange floor. I started in the trading business as a runner, then worked my way through managing a few operations desks for FCMS, and went into the 30-year bond pit where I traded for ten years. It was by far the biggest floor trading pit in the world.

All communication was person to person and located in one central location. So the volume is concentrated during those hours. It was happening on the floors of the exchanges where options traders wanted to get their delta and information live. First, they did it with sheets of paper, then translated over to pads or terminals that they would carry around and use to do their analysis. In the pit, you could tell who the players were. So some brokers and locals were considered the speculators. The brokers were the ones who filled the paper, and the local's job was to move that paper around the pit. So we understood whom the brokers were filling for, and we knew what paper was real and what wasn't. Having that knowledge and information allowed us to do our jobs efficiently. We were all standing there together, everybody watched each other, and everybody knew what was going on. It was fully transparent. I'm so grateful to have had that experience that’s pretty much gone now.

I came to StoneX about two years ago as director of sales. We help our clients by giving them access to the markets. All can be done with us, whether exchange-based FX trading, over-the-counter trading, or EFT markets. And now that technology has changed the world of trading, we are constantly trying to get on the cutting edge of it.

My superpower is listening. It's critical to hear and understand someone's saying and not lose it. If you attend and pay attention to the client’s needs, you'll figure out ways to help them.”
